Watercraft/Boating/Maritime Accidents

Millions of people take advantage of the opportunity that the warm summer months present to get out on the water and enjoy the sun and the splash in many different ways. This has become almost an American tradition, and whether it’s an ocean, a lake or even a river, families and friends everywhere can be seen on their watercraft in high numbers.

Unfortunately, the number of people who suffer the tragic consequences of watercraft/boating/maritime accidents is also on the rise, and there are many reasons for this troubling trend, including:

  • Unqualified drivers – Many people have not been properly certified to handle a boat or watercraft, which means that they do not understand the regulations that are part of every boating experience.
  • Irresponsible navigation – Even if a driver has been trained, that does not prevent carelessness from time to time, much as what one would see on a crowded highway, and accidents often occur as a result.
  • Boating while intoxicated – Boating under the influence is a trend that’s growing much the same as operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and as is the case on the roads, this irresponsible decision can lead to disastrous consequences.

Of course, these are not the only reasons for watercraft/boating/maritime accidents, but they are three of the most common causes for the injuries and deaths that occur when these incidents play out on the waterways.

United States Coast Guard Accident Statistics

This trend is shown in its most tangible manner when taking a look at the accident statistics put forth every year by the United States Coast Guard. For instance, the number of deaths in 2006 related to boating accidents was 710, which rose from 697 in 2005. There were also 3,474 injuries as a result of boating accidents in 2006 as compared to 3,451 in 2005.

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of these statistics is that 90% of those who died in boating accidents perished as a result of drowning. Of those who drowned, it’s estimated that 90% of them were not wearing life preservers at the time. 20% of these accidents occurred in a situation where alcohol was involved.

What it all Means

Basically, this trend is one that does not show any signs of slowing down, as people are boating in higher numbers than ever before, and people are looking increasingly to the water to provide recreation and entertainment. However, everyone should always be aware that anything can happen at any time on the water, and every driver should be extremely defensive in his or her driving tactics at all times. Unfortunately, this will still not be enough to eliminate these types of catastrophes.
